Quick Release Couplings (QRCs)

Quick Release Couplings (QRCs) are precision-engineered connectors designed to enable rapid connection and disconnection of fluid or gas lines without the use of tools. They incorporate an internal valve mechanism that automatically seals the flow when disconnected, minimizing leakage and contamination.

These couplings are widely used in pneumatic, hydraulic, and fluid transfer systems where efficiency, safety, and reliability are critical.

Working Principle

A typical quick release coupling consists of two main components:

  • Socket (Female Coupler)
  • Plug (Male Nipple)

Operation:

  1. The plug is inserted into the socket.
  2. Locking balls inside the socket engage with the groove on the plug.
  3. An internal spring-loaded valve opens, allowing fluid flow.
  4. When disconnected, the valve automatically closes to prevent leakage.

Valve Mechanism Types

  • SingleShut-Off: Valve present in the socket only (minimal pressure drop, slight fluid loss)
  • DoubleShut-Off: Valves in both plug and socket (zero leakage, ideal for hazardous fluids)
  • Straight-Through(FullFlow): No internal valves (maximum flow rate, used where shut-off is not required)

  • Designed to maintain low pressure drop (ΔP) across the coupling

  • Flow coefficient (Cv value) varies depending on size and design
  • Suitable for:
    • Low-pressure air systems (~10 bar)
    • Medium hydraulic pressures (up to 300 bar in heavy-duty designs)
